CDNetworks' Web Application Firewall (WAF) is designed to protect web applications from a myriad of network and application-layer threats. This cloud-based solution integrates with CDNetworks' global content delivery network (CDN) and DDoS protection, providing a comprehensive security posture.
Technically, the WAF operates at Layer 7 of the OSI model, allowing it to inspect and analyze HTTP/s traffic in real-time. It acts as a reverse-proxy shield between the web application and the internet, filtering, monitoring, and blocking suspicious traffic. The WAF is equipped with over 1,000 built-in rules to defend against OWASP Top 10 attacks and leverages artificial intelligence to analyze false positive requests and generate exception recommendations, significantly reducing unnecessary alerts and enabling automatic blocking mode for legitimate threats.
Operationally, the WAF is designed for ease of implementation, often delivered as a SaaS solution with a simple DNS redirection setup. This cloud-based model minimizes upfront costs and ensures continuous updates to counter the latest threats. The infrastructure spans over 2,800 points of presence (PoPs) in more than 70 countries, ensuring compliance with regional data security regulations and optimizing resource allocation for local data compliance.
Key considerations include the flexible pricing model based on bandwidth, number of requests, and traffic, which allows customers to tailor the solution to their specific needs without incurring unnecessary costs. The self-service portal is intuitive and user-friendly, with standardized rule templates and refined access permission configurations, making it easier for organizations to manage and assess their security posture.
However, it's important to note that while the WAF is highly effective, it cannot protect against all types of attacks on its own. It must be part of a broader security strategy that includes other protections such as DDoS mitigation and bot management, which CDNetworks also offers through its WAAP solution.
