The Cloud Protection Manager (CPM) by N2WS manages ensuring comprehensive backup and disaster recovery for AWS workloads, which is often fragmented and manual in large cloud deployments. CPM's technical architecture leverages native AWS snapshot technology to automate backups for a wide range of AWS services, including EC2, EBS, RDS, Redshift, Aurora, EFS, FSx, DynamoDB, and S3.

CPM's approach involves a single dashboard for centralizing and automating backup and recovery operations. It integrates with AWS services, allowing for the creation of flexible backup policies and schedules. The tool supports cross-region and cross-account disaster recovery, enabling rapid restoration of data and environments in seconds, even for complex setups like Amazon Aurora clusters and DynamoDB tables.

Operationally, CPM can be deployed via an AMI from the AWS Marketplace or using a pre-configured CloudFormation template, streamlining the onboarding process. The tool offers enhanced reporting capabilities, allowing users to gather all reports in one tab, view protected and unprotected resources, and utilize new filtering options. Automated resource scheduling helps in managing backup policy spend, and the dashboard provides real-time cost monitoring.

Key technical details include the ability to automate backup snapshots at intervals as small as 5 minutes, ensuring a minimal Recovery Point Objective (RPO). The tool also supports near-zero Recovery Time Objective (RTO) with the capability to restore anything from a single file to a full environment in seconds. Additionally, CPM offers significant storage cost savings by archiving incremental backups to any storage tier and using features like AnySnap Archiverâ„¢.

However, operational considerations include the potential for increased costs associated with large-scale backups, particularly in multi-account setups. The tool's performance and cost efficiency are highly dependent on the configuration of backup policies and the use of storage-optimized archiving. Despite these considerations, CPM's automation and integration capabilities make it a robust solution for enterprises needing reliable and efficient cloud backup and disaster recovery.
