Zscaler Private Access

Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) addresses the core security and operational challenge of providing secure, seamless access to private applications for a hybrid workforce, while minimizing the risk of data breaches and lateral movement. This cloud-native Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution replaces traditional VPNs and VDI solutions by brokering direct, one-to-one connections between authorized users and specific applications, without granting access to the corporate network.

Technically, ZPA uses a holistic security service edge (SSE) framework, which can be deployed either as a ZPA Public Service Edge in the cloud or as a ZPA Private Service Edge on-premises. The architecture includes App Connectors that sit in front of applications in the data center and public cloud, providing inside-out TLS 1.3 connections that make applications invisible to the internet and prevent DDoS attacks. ZPA also integrates with Identity Providers (IdPs) for user authentication and uses a risk-based policy engine to continuously validate access policies based on user, device, content, and application risk posture.

Operationally, ZPA is designed for rapid deployment, often in a matter of hours, and does not require any appliances. It supports both client and clientless access, with browser access capabilities that enable seamless user-to-app connections without the need for software clients on devices. This approach reduces the attack surface and eliminates lateral movement, while providing comprehensive visibility into user, device, and application activity.

Key technical details include the use of AI-powered user-to-app segmentation and context-aware policies, which help in reducing the attack surface and preventing lateral threat movement. ZPA also offers integrated services such as advanced threat protection, private app protection, deception, and data protection, including full TLS/SSL inspection at scale. The solution is scalable, with over 150 points of presence worldwide, ensuring low-latency access to private applications from any location.
